The Pulaski Technical College Choir will perform a medley of traditional holiday carols in its first full-length concert on Thursday, Dec. 7.
The hour-long holiday concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the R.J. Wills Lecture Hall on the second floor of the Campus Center. It's free and open to the public.
The concert is dedicated to the late Dr. Ryan Chadwick, who chaired the Fine Arts Department. Beloved by her students and fellow faculty, Dr. Chadwick helped lay the foundation for the college's music and choir program. She died in June 2005 before the choir had gotten off the ground.
"Dr. Chadwick wanted to see a music department started," Dr. Milton Lites, choir director, said. "So we are dedicating this holiday concert to her because it was one of her dreams."
The choir's repertoire will include 14 selections, including songs in English, Latin and Spanish and a solo by Jim Munns, minister of music at Pulaski Heights Baptist Church and an adjunct music instructor at Pulaski Technical College.
The choir has been rehearsing all semester for its first concert.
"It won't be a perfect concert," Dr. Lites said, "but it's going to be awesome."
Beginning at 7 p.m., the Geyer Springs First Baptist Church handbell choir will provide a pre-concert serenade in the R.J. Wills Lecture Hall.
The handbell choir is directed by Ron Selby, coordinator of instrumental activities at Geyer Springs First Baptist and music instructor at Pulaski Tech.
On Friday, Dec. 1, the choir plans to briefly serenade students, staff and faculty inside the Campus Center around 12:15 p.m. Friday.
For those who can't attend the Dec. 7 evening concert, the choir invites students, staff and faculty to its dress rehearsal on Tuesday, Dec. 5, for a sneak preview. The rehearsal begins at 4:45 p.m. in the R.J. Wills Lecture Hall.
You can also hear the choir perform Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Winter Wonderland at the William J. Clinton Presidential Park. The event runs from 3:30-6:30 p.m. and includes holiday music and activities, a Santa visit and a lighting ceremony.
Pulaski Technical College Choir members include Cynthia Brown, Cortney Butcher, Doris Champ, Aliya Dame, Amy Hicks, Deborah Johnson, Shundra King, Deborah Marks, Shanel Price, Samuel Ringgold, Adam Tompkins, Megan Vaughn, Johna Ward, Kimberly Stafford, Danielle Jones, and Pulaski Technical College music instructors Jim Munns and Ron Selby.
