Young aspiring chefs who are entering grades 5-12 are invited to join Chef
Cynthia Malik and staff at Central Arkansas' premiere culinary institute for the
Pulaski Technical College's first-ever Youth Chefs Summer Culinary Camp.
The first sessions is July 21-July 25 with orientation taking place on July 18 at 3 p.m. The second session runs July 28-Aug. 1 with orientation planned for July 25 at 3 p.m.
The camps will operate from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. daily at the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Institute, located at13000 Interstate 30, Little Rock.
The cost per session is $250. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are included in the price, along with a chef's coat, chef's hat and recipe packets.
During each session, students will hone their skills by rotating through stations in the kitchen including starters, snack and breakfast, entree, and dessert. They will learn knife skills; how to make soups, stocks and sauces; cooking methods, meat and seafood cookery; vegetable, fruit, bean, and grain cookery; and basic baking and pastry techniques. Students will also learn the basics for maintain a clean kitchen. Life skills such as teamwork, dependability, communication skills, organization, nutrition and leadership skills will be emphasized.
On the last day of each session, students will prepare and serve a three-course meal for two guests that they may invite. The meals will reflect the skills they have learned throughout the week.
An orientation session will be held for students prior to their sessions. Students are encouraged to attend orientation to receive their coats and hats, tour the kitchen, be assigned to groups and receive a brief overview of the camp.
