Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory Therapy is a patient care field which deals primarily with patients who have respiratory problems. Professional opportunities are constantly increasing, and many areas of respiratory care are becoming specialized. Specialty areas in Respiratory Therapy are: pulmonary function testing, stress test, arterial blood gases, electrocardiograms (ECG's), neonatal transport and intensive care, cardiovascular intensive care, respiratory intensive care, medical intensive care, administration, classroom instruction, clinical instruction, medical equipment and homecare, rehabilitation, and polysomnography (sleep studies). The Respiratory Therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).

Acceptance into the Pulaski Technical College Respiratory Therapy Program is highly competitive with 24 students accepted each year. The professional component of the program begins in the Summer Extended semester each year and ends in May. After graduation, students will be eligible to take national credentialing examinations and become a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Admissions Requirements:

All applicants for the Respiratory Therapy Program must fully meet the following qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years of age by June 1 of the current year.
  • Completion of all 23 semester hours of the General Education prerequisite courses with a C or above.
  • A clear criminal background check and negative drug screen from a PTC RT Program APPROVED agency.
  • A physical examination to include a TB skin test and Hepatitis B vaccination.
  • Independently lift or move 70 pounds

** Applicants who have been previously accepted and/or enrolled two or more times in a CoARC accredited program will be denied admissions.

Goals and Competencies

Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care

To prepare graduates with demonstrated competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by registered respiratory therapists (RRTs).

Program and Graduation Requirements:
  • Successful completion of classroom and laboratory training with a minimum of a 76%.
  • Successful completion of all clinical training with a minimum of a 76%; Students may be required to travel outside of Pulaski County for a clinical rotation.
  • Successful completion and certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP.
  • Successful completion and passing of the Therapist Multiple Choice (TMC) CAPSTONE graduation exam.
  • Current and active member of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).

(Graduation does not guarantee job placement).

Approximate Program Costs: $8690 (12 month RT Program costs after completion of prerequisite coursework; not to include fuel cost).

Licensure and Certification:

Graduates of the Associate of Applied Science degree program are eligible to apply for the Therapist Multiple Choice (TMC) Examination and the Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE) offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Successful candidates earn the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials. Successful completion of this program does not ensure certification or registration.

Successful completion of the Associate of Applied Science degree in Respiratory Therapy and earning the NBRC credential satisfies the requirements to apply for a license in the State of Arkansas, but does not guarantee one being issued.

This program of study requires special program fees beyond current tuition and college fees.
