Wx. Retrofit Installer - Site-Built Homes

Wx. Retrofit Installer - Site-Built Homes course is an introductory course designed to familiarize the participant with the Weatherization Assistance Program, the science of weatherization as it applies to site-built homes, and the proper application of weatherization retrofit measures. This course involves in-depth classroom instruction and combines state-of-the-art laboratory demonstrations with hands-on exercises. Some of the areas of study are: attic preparation and air infiltration, blower door basics, insulation installation, door and window installation and safety. This course is a necessary building block course for the Department of Energy recommended BPI/NREL credential for Retrofit Installer.

Wx. Retrofit Installer - Mobile Homes

Wx. Retrofit Installer - Mobile Homes course is designed to be an essential building block onto Wx. Retrofit Installer - Site-Built Homes course. As one of the required three courses of study for work in the Arkansas Weatherization Assistance Program, it contains a review of Wx. Retrofit Installer - Site-Built Homes course, a comprehensive study of mobile home construction and energy dynamics particular to mobile homes and hands-on practice in roof insulation, side wall insulation, belly repair and insulation.

Weatherization Health and Safety

The Weatherization Health and Safety class is the third building block course required for work in the WAP. Upon successful completion of this course and the other building block courses, the trainee will have been thoroughly trained in the knowledge, skills and abilities recommended by the Department of Energy, for BPI/NREL credential of Retrofit Installer. This course covers the wide range of health and safety concerns to the worker in the field as well as the client residence. Topics of instruction include building material and biological hazards, fire and electrical hazards, air quality hazards and occupant behavior hazards common to Arkansas homes. Special attention will be paid to the proper use of personal protective equipment, deferral procedures, OSHA standards and EPA guidelines. The course also thoroughly covers the DOE required energy-related mold and moisture module as well as the DOE’s lead-safe weatherization module.

Wx. Intermediate Fundamentals

The Wx. Intermediate Fundamentals course advances the professional knowledge and skills that trainees gained in PTC’s Introductory Weatherization courses, specifically in regard to assessing the building shell, and Combustion Appliance Zone diagnostics. The course covers aligning the thermal, air, and pressure barriers as well as advanced blower door, zone pressure and duct leakage diagnostics. It is an essential building block for preparation to challenge the Department of Energy recommended BPI/NREL credentialing exams for the Wx. Crew Leader, Wx. Energy Auditor and Wx. Quality Assurance Inspector designations.

Prerequisites: This is an advanced class, it is strongly suggested that the candidate have extensive construction experience and/or experience in building energy auditing and modeling. A base understanding of building science is recommended prior to challenging this course.

Heating Systems for Auditors/Inspectors

The Heating Systems for Auditors/Inspectors course covers the wide range of appliances, diagnostic techniques and weatherization measures involved in home heating, venting and cooling. Trainees will learn basic heating system operation, how to identify subsystems of mechanical systems and test for CO and back drafting dangers. They will define the combustion appliance zone (CAZ), and adjust it for safety and proper functioning of combustion appliances. Students will learn terminology and operational concepts associated with HVAC systems in order to better communicate with repair and installation technicians. Special attention will be paid to Arkansas-specific heating and cooling systems.

Prerequisites: This course is designed to enhance the performance and understanding of the experienced Energy Auditor or Quality Assurance Inspector.

Wx. Energy Auditor – Single Family

The Wx. Energy Auditor – Single Family course is designed to provide thorough training in the principles, tools and procedures of energy auditing. Topics covered include consumer education, the whole-house approach and the energy auditor’s toolbox. Trainees will work through the entire auditing process, focusing on the client interview, inspection and diagnostics, assessment of combustion appliances and work order generation. This course is an essential building block for preparation to challenge the Department of Energy recommended BPI/NREL credentialing exams for the Wx. Energy Auditor designation.

Weatherization Crew Leader

The Weatherization Crew Leader course is designed to thoroughly prepare trainees to successfully manage weatherization crews in the field. Topics covered include leadership and communication skills, techniques of effective crew management and equipment and materials organization. Trainees will also learn about building and safety codes, quality control measures, and proper utilization of work orders. Special emphasis is placed on providing and maintaining a safe work site and client education. This course is an essential building block for preparation to challenge the Department of Energy recommended BPI/NREL credentialing exam for the Weatherization Crew Leader designation.

Wx. Quality Assurance Inspector

This course is designed to give experienced Energy Auditors the knowledge and abilities to become Wx. Quality Assurance Inspectors in the Weatherization Assistance Program workforce. The trainee will learn selection criteria for weatherization measures, Appendix A as a tool for materials selection, definitions and resources for residential building, electrical and mechanical codes, application of codes in weatherization, definitions and resources for worker safety requirements, and inspection techniques for post weatherization retrofits. This course is an essential building block for preparation to challenge the Department of Energy recommended BPI/NREL credentialing exam for the Quality Assurance Inspector.

Advanced Combustion Air Zone Diagnostics

This is an advanced course designed for the experienced Building Energy Auditor or Rater. Trainees will learn advanced CAZ testing and diagnosing techniques and corrections in addition to those specified in the Arkansas Fuel Gas Code. A combination of classroom instruction coupled with hands on practicum in a state of the art laboratory environment prepare students to know what a CAZ is and be able to perform diagnostic testing and analysis to better understand factors that affect CAZ performance. Candidates for this class should have a strong background in Building Energy auditing and modeling software. CEUs for BPI BAs are available for this class.

ASHRAE 62.2 2010

In this class students will be introduced to the ASHRAE 62.2 2010 standard. Students will learn the ins and outs of the standard and why ventilation in houses is a necessity. Through practical exercises students will learn how to calculate the fan size based on the ventilation needs of the building and the standard. Students will also learn different fan options and installation methods.

Duct Blaster Diagnostics

Students will learn the fundamentals of a duct blaster. How to use a duct blaster, when to use a duct blaster and how to interpret the results are all goals of this training session. Students will be given a variety of exercises in our state of the art diagnostic cabins that will challenge their critical thinking skills. Utilizing the duct blaster results with the audit software will help students understand how to use a duct blaster to perform a more comprehensive home energy audit. CEUs for BPI BAs are available for this class.

Healthy Homes Practitioner

This course is sponsored by the National Center for Healthy Housing. Topics of discussion include pest management, indoor air quality, chemicals and poisoning, trip/fall hazards and hoarding. This is an essential course for understanding the holistic approach to Healthy Home inspections. This is an approved CEU course for Home Health Care professionals, Building inspectors, Appraisers, BPI BAs and others. Check with your organization for approval.

Building Analyst

Building analyst is a preparatory class for those seeking the Building Analyst certificate offered by Building Performance Institute. A must have course for the individual looking to enter the green workforce or to add energy efficiency to their existing business. This class covers basic building science with “house as a system” approach. This is a seven (7) work day long class culminating with an online proctored exam. Field exams may be scheduled separately. Exam fees are included.

RESNET Rater

This class is designed to instruct the students in the building science and inspection techniques for performing an energy rating on residential properties. RESNET rater software is also covered. This is an eight (8) work day long class. Exam fees are included.

EPA Lead RRP

This is a preparatory class for the renovator certificate which is required for WAP and contractors working on homes that were built prior to 1978. Students will learn the legal rules, the effects of lead in the blood as well as how to use lead safe practices on the job site. This is an eight (8) hour course

Wrightsoft Suite

This course is designed to teach the student how to use the Wrightsoft suite of software for the HVAC industry. Topics covered include: duct sizing, unit sizing, load calculations etc...

Attic Prep/Air Sealing

This class is two days of hands on instruction and practicum dealing with the proper installation of weatherization measures in residential housing. Topics covered include: material selection, damming, bypass sealing and knee walls. CEUs for BPI BAs are available for this class. This is a sixteen hour course that aligns with the JTAs for Retrofit Installer and Crew Leader HEP classifications.

Blower Door/Duct Blaster diagnostics

This class is two (2) days of hands on instruction and practicum dealing with the set up and operation of blower doors and duct blasters. Topics covered include: Blower door/duct blaster set up, operation and interpretation, pressure planes and flow hood use. CEUs for BPI BAs are available for this class. This is a sixteen (16) hour course that aligns with the JTAs for the HEP classifications Crew Leader, EA and QCI

All about Insulation

In this class the student will explore the characteristics and accepted best practices for installing a variety of insulating materials. Cellulose, fiberglass, foam boards and foams will all be examined in this extremely informative two (2) day class.
Machine set up and operation, Material Safety Data Sheets, employee safety, best practices installation techniques will be explained as well as insulation values and characteristics of the different materials.

A must have for builders, insulators and homeowners. This is a sixteen (16) hour course that aligns with the JTAs for Retrofit Installer and Crew Leader HEP classifications.

Valuation of Energy Efficient Homes for Appraisers
