Pulaski Tech receives $25,000 Wal-Mart grant
2/3/2009

Pulaski Technical College has received $25,000 from the Wal-Mart Foundation that will be used for the completion of the library at Little Rock-South.

The foundation awarded $843,000 in grants to 15 non-profit organizations and projects across Arkansas. The awards presentation was made Friday at the Wal-Mart store on Arkansas 10 in Little Rock.

Other grant recipients included Arkansas Literary Councils, the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation, Our House, CARTI Foundation, Make a Wish Foundation of the Mid-South, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Band, the Twentieth Century Club's Lodge, Mission Outreach of Northeast Arkansas, Economics Arkansas,  TOPPS, Inc. (Targeting Our People's Priorities With Service), the Arkansas Fallen Firefighters' Memorial, the Fort Smith Adult Education Center, the Arkansas Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Ozark Mountain Treatment Center.

"In these difficult times, the work that we do to support the communities in our home state is more important than ever," said Margaret McKenna, president of the Wal-Mart Foundation. "We are committed to helping organizations that create opportunities for individuals and families to live better and we will continue to look for ways to improve the lives of Arkansans."

Governor Mike Beebe praised the work of the Wal-Mart Foundation in supporting Arkansas organizations.

"Nonprofits and service organizations are often the first to suffer when economic times are bad," Gov. Beebe said in a news release. "The Wal-Mart Foundation is setting a laudable example by holding strong to their commitments of support to these Arkansas community efforts.

Pulaski Tech will use the grant money to help complete the library at Little Rock-South, which opened in August 2008 and now serves more than 1,000 students, primarily from Saline and southern Pulaski counties.

"A well-stocked and staffed college library is a vital part of a student's education and an important element in the overall effectiveness of the college," said Joyce Taylor, executive director of the PTC Foundation. "We are grateful Wal-Mart values education so highly and is willing to invest in Pulaski Technical College students' lives in this most important manner."
