Pulaski Technical College has received a $2,500 grant from the C. Louis and Mary C. Cabe Foundation to offer a two-week summer writing program for teens.
The Summer Writing Institute for Teens - SWIFT for short - will be conducted July 9-20. Classes will meet 8 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday on the college's main campus, 3000 W. Scenic Drive in North Little Rock.
The program is open to students in grades 6-12 who would like to explore the creative writing process and improve their reading and writing skills. Classes will be offered in poetry, fiction, oral histories, fables and fairy tales, and books to film.
"We are incredibly excited to offer this unique program in creative writing to area students," said SWIFT coordinator Sandy Longhorn, who is an English instructor at Pulaski Technical College. "Any student, currently in 6th-12th grade, with an interest in writing, is encouraged to apply."
Classes will be taught by instructors who hold a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and other experts.
Tuition is $150 per student and includes the cost of supplies, materials and a SWIFT tee-shirt.
Cabe Foundation funding will provide five scholarships to students who show financial need.
The Cabe Foundation was established in 1989 by C. Louis and Mary C. Cabe of Gurdon, for the purpose of assisting charitable groups, school and other organizations.
The Pulaski Technical College Foundation assisted with the grant application.
The deadline for application and tuition payment is May 1. Scholarship applications are due no later than May 1. Applications are available on the college Web site under Special Events.
