Calling all green thumbs...

Volunteers are needed to help with a special landscape project on Saturday, May 19.

Campus volunteers will be planting several hardy palms and other subtropicals, beginning at 9 a.m. Volunteers will meet on the Campus Center promenade where the palms will be planted.

The trees are being funded by a grant from the Southeastern Palm Society. Austin Lovenstein, a Pulaski Technical College math instructor and avid gardener, applied for the grant earlier this year and his proposal was accepted.

The plantings will include two large windmill palms, six Sabal minors, and two needle palms. The current Nandina plants will be relocated in the planters making an interesting contrast with the hardy palms.  The larger evergreens will be removed and relocated to other landscape areas on campus.

Donations will be accepted to purchase signs displaying the common and botanical names for each species.
"The goal of any college is to educate others, and the palm display will be no exception," Lovenstein said.
