Student, faculty polls show support for athletic program

In separate polls conducted at Pulaski Technical College, faculty and students expressed their approval of establishing an intercollegiate athletic program at the college.

James Short, Pulaski Tech Student Government Association president, said 421 students--or 77 percent of those participating in the poll, voted in support of a proposal presented by the Arkansas Junior College Athletic Foundation, which calls for establishing a men's football program in 2004 and a women's volleyball program the following year.

Eighty-four students (15 percent of those responding) voted against the proposal and 46 students (8 percent) took a neutral stance, Short said. A total of 551 students participated in the poll.

Jason Bass, Pulaski Tech Faculty Council President, said 61 faculty members--or 80 percent of those responding to a faculty poll, expressed approval of the proposal. Fifteen faculty members (20 percent of those responding to the poll) expressed disapproval.

The athletic foundation presented the plan at the July 7 meeting of the Pulaski Tech Board of Trustees. John E. Barnes, chair of the board's athletic committee, said the trustees decided to delay a decision on the proposal until a special meeting Sept. 15 in order to garner faculty, staff and student input into the decision-making process.

By state law, no college or state funds can be used to fund two-year college athletic programs. All funds must be raised from the private sector.
