Australian conservationist to lecture Monday

Australian conservationist John Seed will give two multi-media presentations in the R.J. Wills Lecture Hall on Monday, April 23, in observance of Earth Day at Pulaski Technical College.

Seed's presentation, entitled "Climate Change, Despair and Empowerment Roadshow" will take place at 11 a.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. Both presentations, sponsored by PTC's Student Government Association, are free and open to the public.

Seed will address the psychological and emotional issues surrounding global warming and discuss the roles public and personal denial, helplessness and despair play in the fight against climate change.

John Seed is founder and director of the Rainforest Information Centre in Australia. Since 1979 he has been involved in initiatives to protect Australian rainforests. In 1984 he helped initiate the US Rainforest Action Network. In 1987 he co-produced a television documentary for Australian national television about the struggle for the rainforests.

He has written and lectured extensively on deep ecology and has been conducting "Councils of All Beings" and other workshops  in Australia, North America, Japan, India, Thailand  and Europe for 15 years. With Joanna Macy, Pat Fleming and Professor Arne Naess, Seed is a co-author of Thinking Like a Mountain - Towards a Council of All Beings (New Society Publishers) which has been translated into 10 languages. He founded World Rainforest Report in 1984 and currently remains one of the editors. (www.rainforestinfo.org.au)

He is an accomplished bard and songwriter and since 1981 has produced five albums of environmentally-themed songs.

In the last few years he has scripted and produced several videos, the latest of which is called "Work in Progress." He regularly lectures at universities in Australia, the United Kingdom, Asia and in the United States.
