PTC hosts statewide conference on adjunct faculty

Pulaski Technical College is hosting a statewide workshop to help education administrators improve their skills in managing adjunct faculty.

The conference will take place 8 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Pulaski Technical College Campus Center Grand Hall.

Pulaski Technical College is sponsoring the conference in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Higher Education and the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges.

The conference theme is "From Pinch Hitters to Most Valuable Players: Major League Solutions for Working with Adjunct Faculty." Workshop topics will cover legal issues, evaluation and assessment, and roles and responsibilities of department chairs.

Guest speakers include Dr. James O. Hammons, professor of higher education at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and Dr. Helen Burnstad, director emeritus of staff and organizational development at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan.

A roundtable discussion will focus on best practices, management and classroom observations.

"Our adjunct instructors are a crucial part of our teaching staff. They bring a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience of their disciplines to the classroom," said Dr. Dan F. Bakke, president of Pulaski Tech. "College deans, academic department chairs, and anyone who works with adjuncts at a college or university would benefit from this conference."

The conference is funded in part by the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act.

The cost is $75 per person. Attendees may register on the day of the conference.
