Enrollment tops 6,100 mark

Enrollment at Pulaski Technical College has reached a record high, with 6,128 students registering for the fall 2003 semester.

Dr. Dan F. Bakke, college president, said credit headcount enrollment on the 11th day of classes, which serves as the official census day, represented a 14.5 percent increase from the fall 2002 enrollment of 5,348 and a 23 percent increase from the fall 2001 enrollment of 4,966.

While 38 percent of the students are enrolled in occupational/technical programs, Bakke said 62 percent of the students are enrolled in courses and programs designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. A total of 700 students are enrolled in online courses.

"Much of our growth can be attributed to the tremendous need for the types of programs and services we offer the central Arkansas community," Bakke said.

"Projections indicate that our enrollment will reach 7,500 students by 2005 and 10,000 students by 2010 if we are able to obtain additional funding for personnel and facilities."

Pulaski Tech is the largest two-year college in Arkansas and one of the fastest growing two-year colleges in the nation, Bakke said. Based on funding per full-time equivalent student, Pulaski Tech is the lowest-funded institution of higher education in the state.

Pulaski Tech offers more than 40 associate degree and technical certificate programs designed for career entry or advancement, as well as a comprehensive university-transfer program, continuing education opportunities and customized training for business and industry.
