Members of Pulaski Tech's Student Government Association are in New Orleans this week to help with ongoing hurricane recovery efforts.
Volunteers include William Clay of Little Rock, Tracy Fox of Little Rock, Justin Lieber of Little Rock and Cheniqua Reynolds of North Little Rock, and Summer Tumbleson, director of student life and leadership at Pulaski Tech.
The group left at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, and plans to return Jan. 6.
The group is volunteering through the Louisiana United Methodist Disaster Recovery Ministry, which helps storm survivors rebuild their homes damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
While in New Orleans, the Pulaski Tech group is staying at the Felicity House, a church parsonage. Much of their work will entail gutting homes and prepping the structures for rebuilding.
The trip is the second such volunteer project for Pulaski Tech's Student Government Association. In May 2006, a team of six students and staff members spent four days in New Orleans, gutting the floodwater-damaged home of a 92-year-old woman.
"It's a lot of work but very fulfilling," Tumbleson said.
The students will give a presentation about their trip to fellow students, staff and faculty when they return.
