College celebrates Black History Month Feb. 24 with banquet, music

"Believe - Achieve - Succeed: Celebrating African-American History in Song" was the theme of the fourth annual Black History Banquet Friday, Feb. 24, at Pulaski Technical College.

Sponsored by the Cultural Diversity Committee, the banquet featured special guests Dr. Kondwani Phwandaphwanda, professor of music at the University of Central Arkansas, and Lisa Phwandaphwanda of the Pulaski Tech TRiO Scholars program, who presented "Sounds from the Mother Land."

Byron Blackmon of Blackmon Lawn Care and Vondra Armstrong, instructor of business, presented "Sounds in a New World." Louis Heard III, a Pulaski Tech alumnus and music major at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and Kimberly Halpern, instructor of developmental writing, presented "Sounds of Free Expression."

The Radio Chorus of the Church of Christ at Lewis Street, along with Dianne Butler, counselor, presented "Sustaining Sounds of Faith." Antoinette Brim, English instructor, served as mistress of ceremonies. Pulaski Tech student Helen Daniels offered the welcome.

Also participating in the program were Dr. Dan F. Bakke, president; Purnell Henderson, vice president for instruction; and student ambassadors Shanie Lipsie and Phyllis Fields. H&H Catering provided catering.
