Board tables football, volleyball proposal until Sept. 15

The Pulaski Technical College Board of Trustees agreed Monday, July 7, to postpone its decision on a proposal from the Arkansas Junior College Athletic Foundation to establish an intercollegiate athletic program at the college.

The foundation, a nonprofit organization, submitted the plan, which calls for establishing a men's football program in 2004 and a women's volleyball program the following year.

John E. Barnes, chair of the board's athletic committee, said the board decided to delay a decision on the proposal until a special meeting Sept. 15 in order to make a more informed decision.

"Most of our students and faculty are home for the summer," Barnes said. "Tabling the vote until September will allow the faculty, staff and students to provide additional input regarding the proposal."

In other business, the board:

  • approved a proposal for new associate of applied science degrees, technical certificates and certificates of proficiency in crime scene investigation and law enforcement administration;
  • tabled a proposal for a new technical certificate in cosmetology at the Saline County Career Center;
  • approved a proposal to change the name of the Workforce Development Center to the Business and Industry Center;
  • approved a policy on electronic solid waste management;
  • ratified the employment of Angie Macri-Hanson, instructor of English, and Cynthia Williams, instructor of developmental mathematics;
  • approved requests for provisional positions;
  • heard a report on an 8 percent increase in summer II enrollment from last year;
  • approved title changes for University Studies, Technical and Industrial, Information Technology, Allied Health and Human Services (vacant) and Business division chairs, College Relations and Marketing director and Continuing Education and Business Outreach director to deans of their respective areas; and
  • heard Continuing Education/Business Outreach Division, finance, public relations and marketing, early retirement, technology and Pulaski Tech Foundation reports.
