Pulaski Tech team attends Strategy Institute for Achieving the Dream
2/17/2011

Eight representatives from Pulaski Technical College attended the annual Achieving the Dream Strategy Institute Feb. 8-11 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Toby Daughtery, a Pulaski Tech graduate with a compelling success story, spoke at the opening session on Tuesday evening.  More than 1,400 individuals from community colleges across the nation were in attendance.

Kareem Moody, director of The Network for Student Success, also participated in a panel discussion regarding African-American male initiatives at community colleges.

In addition to Daughtery and Moody, those representing Pulaski Tech at the Strategy Institute included Dr. Dan F. Bakke, college president; Augusta Farver, interim vice president for instruction; Melissa Hendricks, grants and major gifts officer; Lisa Fisher, director of counseling and advising; Amy Baldwin, English instructor; Cynthia Fletcher, interim dean of the division of academic success; and Maribeth Anders, visual arts instructor and president of the faculty senate.

The 2011 Strategy Institute provided an opportunity for the college to convene with other participating Achieving the Dream schools from around the country to discuss activities and interventions to improve success for low-income students and students of color. Attendees also heard from national-level speakers, attended breakout sessions, met with funders and brainstormed with Achieving the Dream coaches.

Pulaski Tech has been recognized as a leader in the successful implementation of the goals of Achieving the Dream, which focus on data-driven, evidence-based strategies for identifying and overcoming barriers to student success. The college's priority focus areas are developmental mathematics and advising.

The Achieving the Dream initiative was funded for one planning year and four full years.  The college has completed the planning year and two full years of implementation and is currently halfway through the third year of implementation.
